Talking Game Audio with Zachary Quarles, Audio Director at Microsoft (Xbox)

I realized I never linked to this really fun interview I did with the fine folks at Ossic!  I AM DUMB. We talked about all things audio including my process, some of the projects I’ve worked on, VR, and my side projects.  Check it out:

Killer Instinct: Season 3 — TUSK.

VIKING WITH A MASSIVE SWORD. This dude was tons of fun to work on. Lots of really awesome metal/blade recordings mixed with some rad whoosh material that we got by attaching various metal items at the end of an ethernet cable that we whirled around a microphone. Here’s the trailer:

Killer Instinct: Season 3 — Arbiter

If you like Halo AND Killer Instinct, you’ll love this! Arbiter is making a special appearance in KI! How cool is that? Had a lot of fun with this one.  Here’s the trailer:

Killer Instinct: Season 3 — Kim Wu!

The next character we revealed for Killer Instinct was Kim Wu.  She is a returning character from the original franchise and had to be reimagined in terms of how we brought her to the 21st century in terms of sound design.  Here was the trailer that the team put together for her.  This one was a super fast turn around!

Audible Worlds Interview

My pal Mike Niederquell over at Audible Worlds and I chatted for a bit via the interwebs and he posted the interview here.  Check it out if you are interested in nerdy audio talk!  Thanks, Mike! Also, you should follow Mike on the twitterverse:

Exercising Your Creative Muscles and Embracing the Side-Project

I have done a number of these sorts of … Continue reading

SoundWorks Collection Profile: Gravity

I just watched Gravity yesterday and…good sweet merciful crap.  Such an amazing film on so many fronts, but for all of you sound-designers out there; it is REQUIRED viewing. No excuses. Go out RIGHT NOW and experience this phenomenal film, then come back here and watch this video: I’m still trying to really collect my thoughts on the movie as a whole; but when I remove the emotional aspect and I focus specifically on the audio-design and mix, I get inspired. … Continue reading

Writing an Audio Design Document

I often get asked how I “start” a project.  This is a big question.  Multiple things happen all at the same time, but one of the “filters” that I generally use to collect all of these items into a centralized place is the Audio Design Document (also called an audio style guide, sonic bible, etc…).  This becomes a road-map for myself, the audio team, and the project team as a whole on how I guide the audio component of any project that … Continue reading
